A Club for Hot Air Balloon Enthusiasts

History
In 1980, shortly after the new era of hot air ballooning began in other parts of the country with an occasional balloon passing through Chicago, Martin Smith acquired the first resident hot air balloon. The red, white, and blue Raven S-50 arrived in June to be used as a centerpiece for his mother's birthday party. Because of the colors and the gold eagle on its skirt, the balloon was named Morgan.

In November 1980, Martin and a group of locals interested in becoming balloon pilots founded the Northwest Balloon Club which soon grew to be one of the largest and most active balloon organizations in the world. The growth of the balloon population was astronomical and Chicago soon became known as the "Balloon Capitol of the World." Northwest Balloon Club has grown from a membership of 92 in 1983 to membership in 2016 of over 800. In 2000 there were between 250 and 300 balloons in Chicago and the surrounding area.

Getting Involved
Are you interested in getting involved in hot-air or gas ballooning? Whether you would like to join a chase crew, become a pilot, request an area balloonist to do a presentation for your organization or just purchase a balloon ride, the Northwestern Balloon Club can help you get started. We work hard to promote ballooning in the Northwest and will help you get involved.

Ballooning is the oldest form of aviation, dating back to 1780's France, where the concept of using trapped hot-air as a lifting agent was first tested. Since then, ballooning has grown into a popular sport, with tens of thousands of balloonists and crew members regularly enjoying sport ballooning throughout the world.
